Episode Summary

In this solo episode, I’m talking about anxiety, what really causes it, and how we can begin to calm the nervous system and move back into our power.

After the stress, uncertainty, and intensity of 2020, so many people were feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and emotionally exhausted. For some, anxiety was already familiar and became much louder. For others, it may have been the first time they truly experienced it. Either way, anxiety can feel consuming, confusing, and hard to break out of.

In The Adult Chair, we define anxiety as the physical manifestation of unfelt emotions. Our thoughts create emotions, and when those emotions do not move through the body, they can become stored, pent up, and overwhelming to the nervous system. To truly change anxiety, we have to get to the root of what is happening underneath it.

In this episode, I share two simple steps and five free tools you can use at home to calm anxiety, work through your emotions, and feel more empowered. I also walk you through a mindfulness exercise during the episode so you can begin calming your nervous system as you listen.

This episode is a reminder that anxiety does not have to run your life. When we bring awareness to what is happening inside of us, feel what needs to be felt, and take grounded action, we can move into more peace, clarity, freedom, and power.

Unfelt Emotions

Unfelt emotions are emotions that have not been fully acknowledged, processed, or allowed to move through the body. In The Adult Chair, anxiety is often understood as the physical manifestation of these unfelt emotions. When we push feelings down, avoid them, numb out, or stay stuck in our thoughts, the emotional energy does not simply disappear. It can build up in the body and create anxiety, tension, and nervous system activation.
